Ryan Trecartin just launched his new project, named Riverthe.net, a collaboration with Tumblr founder David Karp (programming by Nick Hasty and Sergio Pastor). Trecartin explains the concept in this interview:

“In River The Net (riverthe.net), [first conceived as Project Ten back in April] you can upload a ten second or less clip, anonymously, and you have the option of giving that video three tags. When you go to the website, there’s no interface, you’re immediately confronted with a video playing full-screen. It picks a tag randomly, and follows that tag. Basically, it creates a situation where there’s a movie made by everyone and the plot arc is the life of a tag. One of the things we kept talking about was wanting to see the interface move inside the content, rather than surrounding the content. “

The CodeOrgan analyses the “body” content of any web page and translates that content into music. The CodeOrgan uses a complex algorithm to define the key, synth style and drum pattern most appropriate to the page content.
Firstly, the CodeOrgan scans the page content and removes all characters not found in the musical scale (A to G), and then analyses the remaining characters to find the most commonly used “note”. If this is an even number the page is translated into the major pentatonic scale of that particular note, it becomes minor if there is an uneven number.
Secondly, the CodeOrgan defines which synthesizer to use. This is based upon the total number characters used on the webpage – there are currently 10 synthesizer effects and the one chosen is picked based upon the percentage of content.
Lastly, the CodeOrgan selects a drum loop based upon the ratio of characters on the page versus the number of characters that are actually musical notes – there are currently 10 different drum loops to pick from.

The focus of the piece is to amplify the concern that physical spaces are slowly losing ground to their virtual counterparts. The amount of structural damage to the building directly correlates to the amount of exposure and attention the web site gets, thus exposing the physical structure’s temporal existence.
The project, by Jonah Brucker-Cohen, is currently installed at the Irish Museum of Contemporary Art, in Dublin. Visit the museum’s website to contribute to the distruction process…

META[CC] seeks to create an open forum for real time discussion, commentary, and cross-refrencing of electronic news and televised media. By combining strategies employed in web-based discussion forums, blogs , tele-text subtitling, on-demand video streaming, and search engines, the open captioning format employed by META[CC] will allow users to gain multiple perspectives and resources engaging current events. The system is adaptable for use with any cable or broadcast television network.
We hope that you will take a moment from your viewing time to add the RSS feed of a blog you find noteworthy. As more information sources are supplied to META[CC], the more intelligent the system becomes. As such, the META[CC] search engine is apolitical and influenced only by the news and information sources supplied by its viewers/users. We apologize, but at this time podcasts and vlogs are not supported.

Conglomco Media Network is pleased to announce the official beta release of the META[CC] video engine at http://meta-cc.net

I’ve been having a website for ten years now, having started in March 1996. (At the time I was a pioneer, I mean for an Italian artist.) If supermarkets do celebrate their anniversary, why shouldn’t I? I make a logo and put it online, feeling like I was giving a party. Pity it’s only a virtual one.

And as anyone does on anniversaries, I think back to my early net-art works, like the first, simple gif-animated works, in 1997, which exploited creatively the random, slow way files had to download (see Unlove), or the visual journal of 2001, and so on. Many things have changed since, even the definition of net-art, and now a journal online is a blog.

Tate Online Events produces a regular programme of talks, symposia, sound & performances. Hosting a range of live webcasts, forums and archived media, in conjunction with Tate Modern and Tate Britain. The next event will take place (in London and on the web) on 10th December. Spheres of Action: Art and Politics is a conference that brings together three of GermanyÌs leading thinkers on philosophy, art and the media (Peter Weibel, Peter Sloterdijk e Boris Groys) to debate the changing relationship between art and politics.

Objects of virtual desire is a project exploring immaterial production in a virtual world, and if and how this can be transferred into an economy of material production. A series of objects produced and owned by inhabitants in the online world Second Life have been reproduced physically and are on sale in a web shop. Each chosen object has a strong sentimental value for the avatar who made or owned it.

Most time capsules involve cramming stuff into a metal box and burying it in a hole in the ground. It’s a method that works, but it’s so primitive. What if you could write an email to yourself, and be assured of receiving it twenty years in the future? From Oct. 24, 2005 to Nov. 30, 2005, Forbes.com will collect thousands of letters that their readers have written to themselves. And deliver them up to 20 years later. It’s called The E-Mail Time Capsule project.

56ktv bastard channel is a cross between a television and a web project, a platform in the Internet that tells the story of itself as a television channel. The channel works with the lowtech and financial means of network art and has collaborators on three continents. Its programme can be received all over the world. On 18 November 2004, bastard channel has been celebrating its start with six programmes within the framework of the Viper Media Festival in the Basel Kunsthalle. By the winter of 2005, seven new programmes will have been added.

YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES (Seoul), MARC LEE (Zurigo)
SHU LEA CHEANG (artista nomade), EXONEMO (Tokyo), BIRGIT KEMPKER (Basilea) JIMPUNK (Parigi), NATHALIE NOVARINA / MARCEL CROUBALIAN (Ginevra), BEAT BROGLE (Berlino), PHILIPPE ZIMMERMANN (Zurigo), JODY ZELLEN (Los Angeles), MONICA STUDER / CHRISTOPH VAN DER BERG (Londra / Basilea), FRAN ILICH (Mexico City), MARTIN DAHLHAUSER & DOROTHEA HEIN (Berlin), ESTEE OARSED (Bangalore).

Visual Complexity, by Manuel Lima, intends to be a unified resource space for anyone interested in the visualization of complex networks. The project’s main goal is to leverage a critical understanding of different visualization methods, across a series of disciplines, as diverse as Biology, Social Networks or the World Wide Web.

Dukino is a young artist. His research deals with the ambivalence of images, he creates ambiguous pictures and ambigrams.

Ideasonair is a web project serving artists. The site promotes artistic ideas in various fields. Artists, poets, architects, designers, critics, curators and ‘lovers of the trade’ who are short on ideas are invited to join. On this blog, the ideas “from hyperuranium” have landed and found a place, or better, a virtual factory. Ideasonair has a particular theory about ideas and how we perceive them.

[ITALIAN BELOW]

La prima lampadina si è accesa stamattina: The random trip-Kit of the imaginary traveller.

Amaztype is a software created by the japanese couple Keita Kitamura and Yugo Nakamura. An on-line flash application allows you to search in Amazon.com databases and creates a visual collage with the results. Amaztype re-writes the search phrases with found items (books, cds..).

Making Sense of Modern Art è uno dei più importanti progetti web a livello mondiale dedicati all’arte contemporanea.
