On April 16th 2007, the ExhibitA gallery on the Odyssey simulator within the online virtual world called Second Life, will present the first comprehensive look at the pioneering work of Gazira Babeli. Gazira is an artist creating works within Second Life and a member of Second Front – the first performance art group in Second Life.
Gazira labels herself a “code performer” and indeed the code is at the heart of her work, tying it to the system at a deep level and reaching out to the viewer in ways that inherent to the SL platform. Her pieces are alive with scripts created using the Linden scripting language – a core component of Second Life. A Campbells soup can that is a trap, and a self proclaimed menace disguised as pop art, encases the viewer and takes him on a ride proclaiming “you love pop art, pop art hates you” until the unsuspecting avatar manages to run fast enough to escape. The sky filled with question marks, a vengeful tornado, these are a few of Gaz’s signature works that can be seen on her site: www.gazirababeli.com.
In the spirit of opensource – Gazira has licensed much of her code via creative commons, and you can download it for your own use on her site.

On occasion of their second solo exhibition at Fabio Paris Art Gallery, and for the first time in Italy, Eva and Franco Mattes (0100101110101101.ORG)...

On occasion of their second solo exhibition at Fabio Paris Art Gallery, and for the first time in Italy, Eva and Franco Mattes (0100101110101101.ORG) are to exhibit the project for which they have been awarded the Premio New York 2006. For over a year Eva and Franco Mattes lived in the virtual world of Second Life, exploring its terrain and interacting with its peculiar inhabitants.
The result of this videogame flanerie is a series of portraits characterized by the bright colors, artificial lighting, polygonal shapes and surreal perspectives typical of virtual worlds. Overall, the series draws on the technological developments which allow the creation of alternate identities within simulated worlds.
These portraits of avatars, which use images derived from videogames, recall a variety of cultural, psychological, political and social references concerning the relationship between high art and subculture, between contemporary art and “traditional” art genres, and between art and life itself.

LOL carries on the work that began with “13 Most Beautiful Avatars”, an exhibition project that involved the physical space of the Italian Academy in New York and the virtual space of Ars Virtua Gallery, and is set to continue in February with the MattesÌ second solo exhibition at Postmasters Gallery in New York.

LOL features five portraits and a triptych, all dedicated to female avatars. The title of the show is an expression much used by the online community to express amusement or jollity (”Laugh Out Loud” or “Lots Of Laughs”) or as a closing greeting (”Lots Of Love”). The fact that the Mattes duo refuse to explain the meaning of this ready-made of web communications leaves it open for interpretation: an artificial language for artificial life forms? A touch of sarcasm towards attempts to interpret a work that should be assessed primarily from the aesthetic point of view? Or rather the revelation that behind the display of apparent high spirits virtual worlds conceal a profound sense of anxiety, an underlying tragedy that at times emerges from these dazzlingly beautiful faces?

On occasion of the exhibition the gallery is to publish the book Portraits, which explores all the stages of this work.

13 Most Beautiful Avatars is the newest installment of Time Shares, a series of online exhibitions co-presented by the New Museum...

13 Most Beautiful Avatars is the newest installment of Time Shares, a series of online exhibitions co-presented by the New Museum of Contemporary Art and Rhizome.org, in conjunction with Rhizome’s Tenth Anniversary Festival of Art & Technology. The exhibition, in Second Life’s increasingly popular Ars Virtua gallery, a virtual nonprofit arts organization will mirror the art gallery in which the newest work by Italian artists Eva and Franco Mattes (a.k.a. 0100101110101101.ORG) is being exhibited.
The Matteses have been living in the virtual world, Second Life, for over a year, exploring its terrain and interacting with its peculiar inhabitants. The result of their “video-game flanerie” is a series of portraits, entitled “13 Most Beautiful Avatars”. Not unlike Warhol’s entourage of stars, captured in the “13 Most Beautiful Boys” and “13 Most Beautiful Women” portrait series emerging from his famous Screen Tests, the Matteses’ “13 Most Beautiful Avatars” captures the most visually dynamic and celebrated “stars” of Second Life.”

The portraits reflect Second Life aesthetics, featuring the bright colors, “artificial” light, broad flat areas, 3D shapes, and surreal perspectives that are typical of this virtual world. Overall, the series draws on the technological developments which allow the creation of alternate identities within simulated worlds, and questions the impact such technologies have on art and society. Despite the relative newness of using video game-derived source materials, the avatars’ icons recall questions common to earlier eras of portraiture, including the cultural and psychological context of the images, and the relationships between high art and subculture, between contemporary art and “traditional” art forms, and between art and life itself.

The Second Life / Ars Virtua show is open November 15 – December 29, and the Italian Academy show is open November 30 – December 19.

Objects of virtual desire is a project exploring immaterial production in a virtual world, and if and how this can be transferred into an economy of material production. A series of objects produced and owned by inhabitants in the online world Second Life have been reproduced physically and are on sale in a web shop. Each chosen object has a strong sentimental value for the avatar who made or owned it.
