P.ankh and the donkey Minuto through different areas of Asturias. The donkey will operate as a living interface equipped with digital hardware such as a GPS, a mobile Internet connection, a computer, a camera and a video camera with which it will create a memory of Asturias, producing and collecting information, re-mapping the territory and geo-categorising knowledge. The rules of the journey are determined by the natural rhythm of the donkey’s pace, giving everything that enters into our perception a measure of human attention.
The people that cross their paths, as well as Internet users, will participate in the project by providing advice and suggestions, contributing to the evolution of the project and the enrichment of the audiovisual and anthropological patrimony of Asturias. The travellers will return to LABoral after each journey where they will carry out activities using the material they have collected. In this way, the exhibition, located in the gallery Platform 1 of LABoral, will evolve and grow throughout the length of the journey and the advancement of its digital representation, connecting virtuality to reality in an indissoluble way.

Common Flowers, a project by Shiho Fukuhara & Georg Tremmel, is based on the first commercially available genetically modified flower, the blue “Moondust” GM carnation developed and marketed by japanese beer-brewing company Suntory. But although Suntory applied for and was awarded with permission to grows this GM plant in its key markets, it chooses not to. Instead the GM blue flowers are grown in Columbia, harvested, and shipped as cut-flowers to the worldwide markets.
With Common Flowers we reverse the plant growing process, by growing, multiplying and technically ‘cloning’ new plants from purchased cut-flowers using Plant Tissue Culture methods. The blue GM carnations are brought back to life using DIY biotech methods involving everyday kitchen utensils and easily purchasable and ready materials.
And because the plants are officially considered “not harmful” and therefore legally permitted to grow outside, we took the next logical step and released the blue GM carnation into the environment. This action should ask questions about the state of intellectual property, ownership and copyright issues surrounding the bio-hacking and bio-bending of plants.

Common Flowers received an Honorary Mention from Prix Ars Electronica 2009, in the Hybrid Art category and it’s currently installed in Linz (Cyberarts exhibition, OK Centrum. 3-09-09 / 4-10-09).

Installation visitors are treated to an up-close-and-personal encounter—seeing, hearing and smelling the heavenly body that dominates our solar system. A hydrogen-alpha telescope captures fantastic images of the sun’s chromosphere; VLF antennas pick up the star’s radiation, which is converted by an amplifier into a soundtrack. And while all that’s going on, the installation space is being suffused with synthetic aromas meant to suggest ozone.

Thousands of bits of polystyrene fly about through the air, with the observer situated right in the middle of it all—literally in the eye of the storm. Regardless of whether he/she focuses on particles whirling all about or looks past the flurry of material off into the distance, the tempestuous circumstances seem to exert an extraordinarily calming effect. This high-energy spectacle suddenly becomes a uniform, almost spellbinding sensory impression.

Piemonte Share Festival 2007 runs parallel with the Universiade and is part of the programme connected to the sporting event. Now in its 3rd year, the Festival will host an exhibition, conferences, meetings, round tables, workshops and live performances. The event will be the size of a soft-rave (a lite version of a rave) or collective party where the magic of the moment creates an atmosphere of festivity and fun, creative exchange and different types of involvement with the audience: artistic, recreational, dance, cultural and up-beat. All admission to the Festival is totally free and the conferences will be both in Italian and English.
Every year a transversal theme impacts the Festival contents, from conferences to performances, via a sampler of creative expressions applied to digital technologies (art, music, live performance, interactive installations, 3D animation, software art). The theme of the 3rd Festival is Digital Affinity / Communities Now that will be presented through taking a look at processes that regulate Communities within creative and innovative processes via meetings and round tables.
Communities today are one of the paradigms that drive transformation by collectively moving into the era of knowledge and information. Communities are multipliers of intelligence, because they give value to individual skills and become engines of growth for society.
Communities then are not just new forms of aggregation, but a way of being and living, a collective and humanitarian project, a culture that links one billion and 80 million people today. The bonds between these people are not just geographical or family based, but inspired by cultural, ideological and political affinity.
Piemonte Share Festival 2007: Digital Affinity / Communities Now
Festival of culture and arts linked to the new media and digital technologies
When: from Tuesday, 23rd January to Sunday, 28th January 2007
Where: Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti main premises :: Via Accademia Albertina, 6 10124 Torino :: www.toshare.it

Sotto al titolo In&Out.

Inaugurazione: Sabato 23 luglio, ore 19.00
Fondazione Michetti, Piazza San Domenico, 1 – Francavilla al mare (CH)
