[Re: ] magazine has launched its first edition. The theme of this international new media online magazine is locative media. Locative Media -recently becoming more popular in Media Art discourses- has roots dating back to the dawn of history. Early myths like the Gilgamesch Epic or – more specific – Homer’s Odyssee deal with issues of location and the recording of movement on earth’s surface. Developments since then include mediaeval cartography as well as the Situationists’ approach to mapping a city. Nowadays Locative Media uses technology to trigger artworks in a specific physical space.
The magazine features an depth interview with locative media artist Jeremy Hight about a new form of dissent utilizing smart mobs, on line community and locative media.

Jeremy Hight (creator of locative spatial narrative and locative media theorist/artist) has published an essay that proposes a new field of art utilizing altitude and locative media. Hight has developed an experiment for the International Space Station that questions all the current notions of location in locative media and proposes the inclusion of perspective. He proposes a new field of art to trigger above cities and the landscape at various altitudes. Published in leading new media journal.

Disappearing zine attempts to address the marvelous nature of the many things* that are disappearing from the world. As there are so very many things, and they are disappearing at such an alarming rate, it was difficult to know where to begin. The approach was to gather a random collection from the 2004 red list (a comprehensive site categorizing endangered and vulnerable plants and animals) and present this much smaller list to an invited group of artists and writers, asking them to explore whichever topic they liked in whatever manner they deemed appropriate.

This list is just the tip of the iceberg (which is also disappearing by the way). the idea is not to educate but simply to consider some of these things because they exist right now and in the future they might not, and we might miss them. some day we may have trouble imagining they ever existed at all.

things* : plants, animals, trees, clean air, clean water, oil, rain forest, languages, etc.

ARTECONTEXTO, art culture and new media, is a magazine about the art of today that is intended to stimulate discussion and theoretical analysis of artistic practices in the international context. It pays particular attention to new media and net.art. ARTECONTEXTO is a bridge connecting Europe and Latin America.
The profound changes that the world of art is undergoing call for new approaches. Artistic practices are now affected by formulas coming from other fields which call for greater complexity in their analysis and new and different tools of understanding. ARTECONTEXTO takes up and reflects this complexity and constitutes a new critical space in progress.

Issue 9
Dossier: Artistic Production and Collecting
+ Intervention in Space : Dan Perjovschi + Antoni Muntadas + John Baldessari + Ignasi Aballì + Austria in ARCO 06 + Entrevistas + Cybercontext + Info + Books + Reviews
