“On May 4th, 2007, we asked internet users to help isolate Michael Jackson’s white glove in all 10,060 frames of his nationally televised landmark performance of Billy Jean. 72 hours later 125,000 gloves had been located. wgt_data_v1.txt is the culmination of data collected. It is released here for all to download and use as an input into any digital system. Just as the data was gathered collectively it is our hope that it will be visualized collectively. Please email links to your apps, video, source code, and/or screen shots to evan[at]eyebeam[dot]org. Work will be exhibited in an online gallery and depending on popularity and interest potentially in a forthcoming physical gallery exhibition as well. Huge thanks to everyone that contributed to the data collection.”

Anyone can recode Karsten’s work and create his own original artwork. The identity application is fully interactive and can be controlled via mouse, keyboard and a graphical user interface. A number of the recoded works submitted will be chosen by the V&A and CBS to appear on London Underground digital screens to promote the exhibition.

He writes: “Instructions are simple…. email your mailing address to stickers[at]evan-roth.com When the stickers arrive in the mail put them up in a location that you find appropriate, take a picture and email me back the photo to the same email address. All photos will be added to a loop on display in the gallery for the length of the exhibition.”
The show, called “One Every Day“, will be on view from November 5 through December 19, 2009 at The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, New York. The exhibition foregrounds the relationship of printed ephemera to cultural and artistic production, and marks the curatorial debut for Printeresting.org.

Inspired by early 19th century mechanical bands such as the nickelodeon, Cybraphon is an interactive version of a mechanical band in a box. Consisting of a series of robotic instruments housed in a large display case, Cybraphon behaves like a real band. Image conscious and emotional, the band’s performance is affected by online community opinion as it searches the web for reviews and comments about itself 24 hours a day.

This installation will allow a global audience to explore real-world locations remotely, and to interact with objects and people in those locations through real-time control of a human test subject. As digital and physical worlds collide, the boundaries between self and other, reality and simulation are constantly challenged and redefined.
Public Avatar will be available online on special events during the year. The dates and times will be announced online. During these events, users will be able to login at www.public-avatar.com. Each logged in user will be placed in a queue and wait for his turn, when he/ she will be able to give simple instructions (such as ‘Turn’+’Left’, ‘SAY’+’hello’ etc) to the avatar for a limited timed period. Users will be able to see and hear what Public Avatar sees and hears via live video stream.

Upcoming performance: 12.- 13. September 2009 MuseumsQuartier, Vienna, Paraflows Festival- Saturday 8PM

The feeds are experienced separately, intimately, requiring participants to get close, to move, to listen, to work together to overhear the dialogue.
With the collective action of two or more participants, a full conversation is reformed in physical space based on the virtual communication of two fictional characters.
At overheredarkhorse.com participants twitter the things they overhear in public bathrooms. They are added to an online map of NYC, creating a visualization of the interactions, ideas, and exchanges occurring in public bathrooms.

A recently launched collaborative web art project is seeking to unveil people’s hidden lives. The premise is that everyone leads two lives. An ‘outer’ life filled with day-to-day activities and to do’s. Jobs, routines, meals, meetings, bills, discussions about the weather. And then there is the ‘hidden’ life. Dreams, hopes, fears, hopes, regrets and imaginings. The things you think but seldom share. Hidden Lives is an online space where you can anonymously unveil your hidden life. And also peek into the hidden lives of people from around the world.

Tobecontinued is a group exhibition in progress that starts with some students of the Fine Arts Academy of Rome. Using Myspace as an interactive platform, Tobecontinued is based on the concepts of open art-work, cause and/vs effect, and free association of ideas	” where the last art-work is always inspired to the previous one, in order to generate an open art-work in continuous evolution that never completes itself. The process is constituted by the single works as video, animations, photos, music, net projects, and shows details, nuances and ideas of the whole art-work’s project. Let’s continue, joining with us and sending your art-work (max. 3 mb per email) at tobecontinued.tobecontinued@gmail.com.

Chromophilia is an international art project focused on the role that colour plays in fashion. The name Chromophilia is adapted form David Batchelor’s book Chromophobia. This book is concerned with the fear of corruption or contamination through colour (chromophobia) and its modern and contemporary manifestations, as well as with resistance to it in art. Colour as an indicator of social mood, environment and culture, has significant commercial implications. Different colour palettes can be attributed to different socio-cultural areas and fashions styles. Colour trends are very recognizable and they fuse indelibly to areas, products and fashions.
The aim of the Chromophilia project is to make people aware of colour forecasting mechanisms while developing a whole new approach to colour in fashion.
Chromophilia blog is a shared space where the chromo-community can post and comment views on colour senses. It consists in collecting a complete documentation on the topic exploring different areas (colour in literature, in visual art, in design, etc.) and different approaches (physical, psychological, economic, social), creating a dialogue with people who are interested in this subject. To add any comment visitors just need to register to the chomo-community and login. The project is developed by an international team including Joanna Bodzek, Valentina Culatti, Giovanna Paternò di Sessa.

Drawball is a website that hosts a large circular image onto which visitors can draw using a limited quantity of virtual ink. In addition to individuals’ small-scale drawings, large virtual communities have collaborated to form larger images or logos. Drawball has become a battleground for image prominence, as users contribute to their own images or vandalize those of others.
To draw on the Drawball, one must first zoom in to the maximum depth, then select a color and pen size. There are six different pen sizes and a color selection tool. Drawball requires users to complete a simple Eulerian path puzzle before drawing, to help prevent use of macros. All new users begin with 15% ink, which slowly regenerates. Drawball identifies users by IP address to enforce its ink rationing system. If the site operator finds a particular drawing with good quality, the drawing is protected from vandalism, and the artist who drew it may be rewarded with unlimited ink.

Shirley Bassey Mixed Up is a collaborative biography: an illustrated biography of the legendary diva, where the reader helps to ‘mix’ the illustrations online, using Internet searches. All illustrations are built on-the-fly from live Yahoo searches. By specifying different searches and playing with the customisation options, the reader creates the illustrations themselves.

This is a traditional (linear) 14-page story built on top of a generative composition tool, that uses Internet search data as its input. The work can be described as a networked narrative, as a story partly created by networked data. Adding unexpected and uncontrolled elements to the story influences and changes the presentation, how it’s experienced and what we take away from it. This shapes the story, changing fact into fiction, sometimes disrupting the story. As the networked elements are dynamic and largely unpredictable, every version of the biography is unique. Your version of the story is packaged into booklet form, for you to print and keep.

In 1968 Andy Warhol stated that In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes. Using Warhol’s statement as a premise, 15×15 advances the statement into the 21st century; with new media technology anyone and everyone can be world famous. For 15 seconds…
Participants can contribute to the piece using a standard mobile camera phone that can capture video, and can send video clips directly from their camera phone using MMS (Multimedia Message Service), via email or upload from your personal computer to the online database www.15×15.org org email me@15×15.org

The clips should be the standard video setting for a cameraphone, 176 x 144 and can be longer than 15 seconds but will be reduced to that length, participants can send as many clips as they wish. The clips can be portraits, experiential, vignettes, experimental, anything within reason, from the banal to the downright bizarre!
The viewable artwork is an interface consisting of 15 individual rectangular screens, each individual screen displays a random video clip stored within the database for a 15 second duration: 15×15.
In the 21st century art is being fundamentally realigned for anyone and everyone. 15×15 is a homage to Warhol, a realisation of the artistic utilisation of new media technology and the democratisation of art in the age of digital production.

Technical requirements:

Requires fast internet connection and fast computer (processor) and Flash 8 plugin. The piece can be viewed on a monitor but is best viewed as a projected piece.

Stunned is proud to announce the opening of the 2006 Net Art Open. Now in it’s fourth edition the Net Art Open takes a different approach to the curation of Net Art online. Rather then present a single event based exhibition selected by a curator or panel of selectors the Net Art, Open is an ongoing blog based process which will unfold over the next six months. Curatorial bias has been removed by accepting all work which meets the criteria. The result is a true reflection of the state of Net Art now.
The emphasis in this edition will be bringing the exhibition to the audience, taking account of the changing way people access the net. With so much new work being produced all the time even with the best will in the world it’s difficult to keep up so the Net Art Open will be blogged one work at a time with RSS feeds for newsfeed readers and blog aggregators, each entry will be tagged for technorati and del.icio.us and a flickr pool will be created. In addition each entry will feature on the front page of Stunned.org.

The net art open was started in 2002 by Conor McGarrigle and Arthur X. Doyle as part of the Irish Museum of Modern Art.com intervention, subsequent editions were in 2003 and 2004-5.

META[CC] seeks to create an open forum for real time discussion, commentary, and cross-refrencing of electronic news and televised media. By combining strategies employed in web-based discussion forums, blogs , tele-text subtitling, on-demand video streaming, and search engines, the open captioning format employed by META[CC] will allow users to gain multiple perspectives and resources engaging current events. The system is adaptable for use with any cable or broadcast television network.
We hope that you will take a moment from your viewing time to add the RSS feed of a blog you find noteworthy. As more information sources are supplied to META[CC], the more intelligent the system becomes. As such, the META[CC] search engine is apolitical and influenced only by the news and information sources supplied by its viewers/users. We apologize, but at this time podcasts and vlogs are not supported.

Conglomco Media Network is pleased to announce the official beta release of the META[CC] video engine at http://meta-cc.net

GAM3R 7H30RY 1.1 is a networked book. The Institute for the Future of the Book, together with McKenzie Wark, created this project to investigate new approaches to writing in the networked environment, and to see what happens when authors and readers are brought into conversation over an evolving text. GAM3R 7H30RY 1.1 – the book and the web site – is a work in progress. We expect it to change over time.
How exactly it changes is up to you. The feedback you give, the conversations you join, the discussions you start elsewhere on the web and out in the world – all could have an impact on subsequent stages of this book, or at least help to shape its larger context. Our hunch is that a good conversation generated here will result in a better book.

McKenzie Wark:

“Together with the Institute for the Future of the Book, I created this website as a way to think to about games. Games, as in computer games, are the subject of my next book, GAM3R 7H30RY. I am interested in two questions.”

1. can we explore games as allegories for the world we live in?
2. can there be a critical theory of games?

“I thought it would be interesting to share the book in its draft state to see if these questions are something other people might have ideas on or might want to pursue”

The Community of Words is a 3D environment governed by the Theory of Emergence. Users are invited to add their own words to the system thereby becoming part of the “community of words	” they can interact with and navigate the environment, and observe the actions of other participants.
One of the system’s main characteristics is the feedback phenomenon that happens while one navigates the 3D environment: the words already present in the space influence other participants, who may interact with them and create new texts in response to them. Participant characteristics such as language, slang, or culture form completely different communities of words and, subsequently, the words that emerge within them.

Lovelines is an exploration of human desire created by Jonathan Harris & Sepandar Kamvar. Through large scale blog analysis, Lovelines illuminates the topography of the emotional landscape between love and hate, as experienced by countless normal humans keeping personal online journals.
Using a data collection engine created by the artists for their recent collaboration, We Feel Fine (www.wefeelfine.org), Lovelines examines thousands of blogs every few minutes to find expressions of love and hate, posted by all manner of people. When it can, Lovelines identifies and saves the age, gender, and geographical location of the person who wrote the post, and then presents that information along with the post. The entries range from frivolous to profound, offering a glimpse into the hearts and minds of people blogging about their wants and needs.
