Capacities is an installation by Stanza. This artwork gathers data from the city (environment) this is then made virtual and then this virtual city is represented as this electronic city. A manipulation of data, that ‘powers’ all the ‘events’ ‘actions’ and ‘processes’ in the installation. The changing data creates; all the changes one experiences in the space. The moving objects, fans, changing lights, motors, noises, that you encounter in the gallery are all responding to changes in temperature, light, pressure, noise, and the sound of the environment and the city outside.

The whole gallery space becomes one large artwork made from real time city information and data. The aesthetic and feel of the space looks like an electronic city. The city is made of units, grids, repetition , building blocks. In the gallery city called ‘Capacities’ the leads, the wires, and cables are incorporated into the artwork to look like a city map.’ Capacities’ looks “designed” like a piece of urban design, a city surveyed and controlled. The whole space becomes a map to wander through.

The surveillance camera seems to have become a real pest that feeds on our privacy. To represent this, camera birds – city birds with cameras instead of heads – were placed throughout the city centre of Utrecht where they feed on our presence. In addition, a camera bird in captivity was displayed to show the feeding process and to make the everyday breach of our privacy more personal and tangible.
panoptICONS is a project by Thomas voor ‘t Hekke and Bas van Oerle who work together by the name of ‘Helden’.

The object, which is shaped as an oversized 3-dimensional computer cursor (pointer), was placed on a square in Figueres, Catalunya during the cultural festival Ingràvid. Here, people could touch it, move it around and sit on it as an alternative to the benches.
Despite being removed from its normal screen based environment, the cursor was still in touch with the digital world. Via an embedded GPS device, the cursor transmitted its geographic coordinates to a website. At the website, the coordinates were mapped in Google Maps thereby documenting the cursor’s movements in the physical world and making it possible for participants to see how they collectively helped move the object around. During the festival participants could also upload photos of the cursor at the website. The photos were automatically placed on the map by matching the photos’ digital time stamp with the GPS coordinates.

The project deals with the design and implementation of a wearable technology for carrier pigeons. The experimental setup allows the user to follow the flight path of a pigeon (with GPS and digital photography from its place of release back to the loft. With the project and the use of standard technology, Der Überflieger is a tool for people to use surveillance as a counter-performance to reflect, mirror and disorient organisations that normally have the power to observe public and private life. The documentation shows the design process and the test flights that were carried out in April 2009 in the area of Graz, Austria.

Shoot me if you can is an urban game inspired by first person shooting online video game. Replace gun with fun, and shoot the opponent team with a cellular phone equipped with a digital camera. Participants shooters are given team color and phone number printed on the sticker. Shooters are ought to take a picture of the opponent team. If successful, she/he sends the picture to the opponent team member, via multimedia SMS system.
Different rules exist for variations in game. Tactics is important part as well as team work and understanding of the urban environment. This work is a commentary on abundance of digital image in our culture, desire to photograph and violence of surveillance camera.

Mobotag, by Marta Lwin, reveals the hidden layers of a city through an active exchange of location based media and text messages via the cellphone. It’s collaborative phone tagging of the city. Part virtual graffiti, part walking tour, “mobotag” creates a spontaneous and easy way for tagging a neighborhood via the cellphone. Send and view messages, images, videos and sounds…

See art, read stories, and watch a hidden layer of the city reveal itself. Respond with your media and participate in the creative expression and mapping of your neighborhood. By sending a text message to “mobotag”, with your city location, you begin an interactive tour of a neighborhood. Using a unique geocoding feature, “mobotag” tells you what other messages exist in your local area. In the near future “mobotag” will also feature art projects including “flyHere,” a mobile phone audio installation featuring native bird calls; “bugBytes,” collectible graphical bugs originating at major telecoms around NYC; and “lookHere,” a written work in short form by a native NY writer.

“mobotag” is a 2006 commission of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. (aka Ether-Ore) for its Turbulence web site. It was made possible with funding from the Jerome Foundation.

HTTP Gallery is pleased to present Urban Eyes, an intermedia project by Marcus Kirsch and Jussi Angesleva. Urban Eyes uses wireless...

HTTP Gallery is pleased to present Urban Eyes, an intermedia project by Marcus Kirsch and Jussi Angesleva. Urban Eyes uses wireless technology, birdseeds and city pigeons to reconnect urban dwellers with their surroundings. The Urban Eyes feeding-platform stands in one of London’s public spaces. By landing on the platform, pigeons tagged with RFID chips send aerial photographs of their locality to surrounding Bluetooth-enabled devices.
In this work pigeons become maverick messengers in the information super-highway, fusing feral and digital networks. HTTP Gallery provides an interface to the project, mixing live and documentary footage and offering visitors an opportunity to experiment with Bluetooth. Being one of the last remaining signs of nature in a metropolis such as London, the urban pigeon population represents a network of ever-changing patterns more complex than anything ever produced by a machine. However pigeons’ movements are based on a one-mile radius around their nest. Any pigeon you see everyday shares the same turf as you. Urban Eyes crosses and expands human mobility patterns offering to reconnect you with your neighbourhood.

In the 1960s, situationists Debord and Jorn composed psycho geographic diagrams of Paris, which described navigational systems based on their drift through the city. For this, they used Blondel la Rougery’s Plan de Paris a vol d’oiseau, a birds-eye map of Paris. Inspired by this methodology, Urban Eyes enlists our feathered neighbours to establish a connection between this view of the city as now distributed by Google Earth and our terrestrial experience.

PARK(ing) is an investigation into reprogramming a typical unit of private vehicular space by leasing a metered parking spot for public recreational activity. Rebar group identified a site in an area of downtown San Francisco that is underserved by public outdoor space and is in an ideal, sunny location between the hours of noon and 2 p.m. There they installed a small, temporary public park that provided nature, seating, and shade.

United we stand. Europe has a mission is the punchy title of the non-existent, fully EU-produced Hollywood-style blockbuster: “A brilliant mix of espionage and sci-fi political stereotypes in which Europe, not the USA, saves the world from impending doom“. The project, by 0100101110101101.ORG, consists in the invention and promotion of this nonexistent movie. It is hitting public and media space all over the world through city-scale urban installations and viral communication tactics.

[ITALIAN BELOW]

United we stand.

HTTP - House of Technologically Termed Praxis, based in London, presents "Abuse of the Public Domain", the first solo show of networked media...

HTTP – House of Technologically Termed Praxis, based in London, presents “Abuse of the Public Domain“, the first solo show of networked media art by UK artist Stanza. This exhibition features large-scale projections of 2 works, which use live real-time data from CCTV cameras cited in two cities, London and New York. Security tracking data is Stanza’s chosen medium for these process led artworks.

Le due gigantesche proiezioni presentate da Stanza sono collegate in diretta con telecamere CCTV, situate a Londra e a New York per catturare la traccia dei passanti: YOU ARE MY SUBJECTS e AUTHENTICITY [Trying to imagine the world from everyone elsesÌ perspective, all at once], verranno contemporaneamente trasmesse in rete, in un interessante intreccio di canali divulgativi.
Stanza spiega: the city of London can be imagined as the biggest TV station in existence.

During the last edition of Peam (Pescara Electronic Artists Meeting), a “mobile” party took place. On sunday 29th of October, from 10 p.m., the GRAVE BUS (a standard city bus) tripped around the city with a dance floor on board. People could jump on at any bus stop and enjoy the dj set….

Tool for armchair activists, by Troika is a machine for remote rants and protests. It can be strapped to lampposts in front of pro-eminent buildings like the house of parliament, or other institutional buildings in front of which many protests occur. Thanks to its embedded mobile telecommunication device, the machine is able to receive incoming sms messages and speak them out loud through its powerful megaphones, thus allowing the armchair activist to shout out its rants and protests in the comfort of his sitting room.

Newsletter a tappeto da The Invader.

Napoli by Google è il nuovo progetto di The Net Observer.
